"Labour Letting The Country Down"

September 7, 2006 12:00 AM

Commenting on Tony Blair's statement today, Jenny Willott, Liberal Democrat MP for Cardiff Central, said:

"Tony Blair was right to apologise to the British people. We have been utterly let down this week by a Labour Party at war with itself.

"The public don't want to hear about angry letters, political rivalries and infantile arguments within the Labour Party. They want to know what the Government intends to do to tackle crime, improve education and bolster the health service.

"The Blair-Brown soap opera is paralysing the Government. The events of this week have illustrated just how deep internal rifts run within the Labour party and this Cold War in Whitehall can only be bad for the country. How can the Labour party govern properly when it is so focused on internal arguments?

"Unfortunately, I don't think Tony Blair's words today will end Labour's squabbling. It's clear for everyone to see that Blair's time is up.

"Through his own action, he has become a lame-duck Prime Minister. He has no-one but himself to blame for this current mess.

"We need an end to this chaos and confusion at the heart of Government. It's time the Government put the public first, not the Labour party."

If you are a resident of the Cardiff Central constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
