Arctic Trek puts Welsh Hospice in Pole Position

November 14, 2006 11:36 AM

Today, Jenny Willott MP announced Ty Hafan, the Children's Hospice in Wales, as her chosen charity to receive sponsorship money from her seven day husky ride trek in the Arctic next February.

In February 2007, Jenny will join a cross-party group of MPs to raise money for three national charities and five local charities (one chosen by each MP), by doing a seven day trek within the Arctic Circle with husky dogs.

Commenting today, Jenny, said:

"Ty Hafan is an amazing place. The services and care they provide for children with life-limiting illnesses, and for their families, is utterly indispensable.

"But their vital work needs to be paid for. Less than a fifth of Ty Hafan's £2.2m annual costs are met by the Government. The rest all comes from public donations and corporate sponsors. Without this money, the charity would close.

"I am delighted, if a little apprehensive, to have this chance to raise desperately needed money for such a dedicated charity.

"The downside is that I will have to trek hundreds of miles with a group of other MPs, through temperatures of up to minus 40 degrees, build my own igloo and catch my own food. But it will definitely be worth it.

"Ty Hafan has been able to continue doing its work over the last 8 years because of the generosity of the people of Wales. I hope that they will continue to show their appreciation and commitment to Ty Hafan by sponsoring my Arctic Challenge next February."

Ceri Legg, Events Manager at Ty Hafan, added:

"We are delighted that Jenny has recognised the vital importance of the work carried out by the hospice. Our thoughts will be with her as she takes on this enormous challenge to raise funds for Ty Hafan."

If you are a resident of the Cardiff Central constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
