Fusion Deal Must Not Push Renewables off the Table

Commenting on the signing of a formal agreement to build an experimental nuclear fusion reactor, Jenny Willott, Welsh Liberal Democrat MP for Cardiff Central, said:
"While I'm glad that there is investment being made in new energy technologies, we must not forget about the potential in the 'forgotten' renewables across the UK and especially in Wales. Tidal power in the Severn Estuary alone could generate enough power to replace 3 nuclear power stations.
"Too much money has already been wasted on traditional nuclear fission. Since 1974, successive Tory and Labour Governments have spent around £6.8bn into research and development while renewables have received a pathetic £540m.
"Nuclear fusion is something of a long-term gamble. There is no certainty that we can actually make fusion work and commercial fusion plants are unlikely to be built before 2045. This is too late to make a big difference about climate change.
"In the short-term, the most sensible approach, especially for Wales, would be to unlock our huge renewables potential, heavily invest in energy efficiency and give microgeneration a massive boost."
