Pensions Lifeboat Throws Divorcees Overboard - Willott

January 8, 2007 3:08 PM

Today, Jenny Willott MP spoke out over the unfair arrangement under The Pension Protection Fund which will remove the right of divorcees to share their ex-spouse's pension if the scheme is held in the government's lifeboat fund for companies that go bust.

Commenting, Jenny said:

"It is grossly unfair that divorcees of partners whose pension is in the Pensions Protection Fund are not entitled to any of that pension. The PPF is supposed to allow pensioners whose company scheme has gone bust, like former ASW workers, to have a normal retirement.

"Under normal divorce settlements, the divorcee is entitled to a share of their partners pension. But the Government is denying the same right to those who it claims it wants to protect the most.

"This is appalling and will mean that many divorcees are left facing financial hardship in retirement through no fault of their own. This must be addressed quickly."

If you are a resident of the Cardiff Central constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
