Government Must Get to Grips with Appaling South Wales Trains Services

January 22, 2007 4:04 PM

Today, Jenny Willott, Welsh Liberal Democrat MP for Cardiff Central, spoke out over the appalling conditions and treatment of many of South Wales railway users saying:

"The treatment of many customers who use train services across South Wales is utterly appalling.

"As Cardiff Central MP, where a large number of people use the railways, I have a large number of letter and emails from constituents who have repeatedly fallen victim to dismal services that make shocking reading.

"People are being packed into a pathetic number of carriages like sardines and expected to stand for hours on end regardless of so called 'guaranteed seat' tickets. At some stations, people are having to wait for 2 or even 3 trains to go past before finding one with room to squeeze them in.

"I have complaints about trains not stopping at scheduled stations stops to make up lost time leaving those on board who wanted to get off forced to make massive and expensive detours from the next station. Some services just don't run at all with little or no warning.

"To top it all off, customers are expected to stump up the cash for price rises across South Wales that are far higher than the national average.

"Last week, I was shocked to hear the Government defending railway franchises in Parliament. They seem totally out of touch with the reality on the ground.

"The Government must get to grips with this. It is in every one's interest that the train services are an attractive and efficient form of transport. At present they are neither."

If you are a resident of the Cardiff Central constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
