ASW Pension Protest Last Chance for Government to Make Amends - Willott

Speaking ahead of tomorrow's protest in Parliament Square where Welsh Liberal Democrat MPs will join former ASW workers and many others to protest to Tony Blair over the Occupational Pensions Saga directly after Prime Minster's Questions, Jenny Willott MP said:
"This protest could be the last chance for Tony Blair to make amends for successive Labour and Tory Governments' role in the loss of almost 1,000 ASW workers hard earned pensions, and over 100,000 others, through no fault of their own.
"The Government has had every opportunity to see justice done and restore lost pensions. Instead, they have ignored the verdict of the Parliamentary Ombudsman, fought the case in the European Court of Justice and left tens of thousands of people receiving nowhere near what they saved.
"The European Court of Justice this week declared that successive British Governments had breached a European directive on pension protection. Yet the Government still refuses to make amends. Today the case is being considered in the High Court.
"The victims of this scandal did nothing wrong. They did exactly what was asked of them, working hard and saving for the future. When the Prime Minister drives past after Prime Minister's Questions, he will see these people whom his Government has let down so badly, including former ASW workers.
"I hope Tony Blair realises the strength of feeling on this issue. It is time for the Government to step up and put things right. Tony Blair shouldn't wait until the High Court gives their verdict - enough people have told him what he needs to do to put things right. Now is the time to do so."
