Bailiffs Using Force Will not Solve Debt Crisis

Commenting on the Citizens Advice service's criticism of proposed new powers for bailiffs, Jenny Willott MP said:
"I am very worried about the prospect of giving bailiffs new powers, particularly the power to force entry or restrain people. Many of these bailiffs are merely hired private firms. The Government's defence of 'don't worry, the men will be trained' is simply unacceptable.
"The growing debt crisis in the UK is not sustainable and the Government has done nowhere near enough to manage it. If the economy takes a downward turn, a lot of vulnerable Welsh families could be in serious financial trouble and in line for visits from these new and powerful bailiffs.
"We need to deal with the underlying causes of the mounting debt crisis and not the symptoms of our debt crisis.
"This means providing comprehensive education on managing personal finances, boosting the supply of affordable housing, cutting tuition fees and cracking down on illegal and unethical practices by some banks, credit card and loan companies."
