Welsh Police Merger Lessons Must be Learnt in Home Office Split

April 24, 2007 4:32 PM

Commenting on former Lord Chief Justice Lord Woolf's warning that the splitting of the Home Office is happening too quickly and without adequate consultation, Jenny Willott MP said:

"The Government must learn from its police force mergers cock-up and ensure that major constitutional changes are not rushed through on a ridiculously short timetable.

"It's only a year since the Government tried to impose their police force merger proposals on Welsh forces within a ludicrous timescale. The saga ended in utter failure and wasted 30,000 police hours and half a million pounds from police force budgets.

"The Liberal Democrats support the idea of a Home Office split and the creation of a Ministry of Justice, but we cannot afford to get it wrong. This requires careful and well thought through reform. We cannot afford another bungled Home Office venture."

If you are a resident of the Cardiff Central constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
