Government Giving up Tackling Benefit Fraud

Commenting on the news that the Department of Work and Pensions is closing three debt centres that have a target of clawing back some £257m in benefit fraud, Jenny Willott MP and member of the Work and Pensions Select Committee, said:
"Just a day after Gordon Brown's tax credits were slated for huge fraud and error problems, it seems the Government is giving up on chasing those who ripped off the benefits system.
"The complexity and vulnerability of many of the Government's new benefit systems, like tax credits, have been a field day for fraudsters and organised criminals.
"But money that is spent on fraudulent benefit claims must be chased up. Benefit fraud and error costs the average Welsh household over £100 a year each.
"This is a typically cynical move by this Government to try to bury the news that it is cutting back on chasing overpaid benefits to fraudulent claimants in the media hubbub of Tony Blair's announcement."
