Government has failed Wales on Renewable Energy

August 13, 2007 4:12 PM

Responding to reports that the Government is set to miss its EU renewable energy targets by a 'wide margin', Jenny Willott, said:

"Labour has missed numerous opportunities to harness the power of renewable energy.

"In Wales alone, the Assembly is around 70% behind its target of generating 10% of its electricity by 2010 from renewable sources. Welsh carbon emissions per person are the 12th highest in the world. When you consider the range of formidable renewable energy sources in Wales, it is such a waste of both environmental and economic potential.

"While other countries sprint ahead with renewable energy and reap the economic benefits of developing these green technologies of the future, the UK has barely started to crawl.

"Germany, Denmark, Spain and Finland are all on target to meet their renewable energy targets and yet most experts would argue that the UK has superior renewable energy potential.

"After 10 years, it is painfully obvious how inept and ineffective Labour's leadership has been over climate change and renewable energy. This must change before it is too late."

If you are a resident of the Cardiff Central constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
