ASW Fight for Pension Justice Continues

November 20, 2007 12:00 AM

Ahead of the release of the Young Report into the Financial Assistance Scheme, Jenny Willott MP joined former Allied Steel & Wire workers today in a vigil outside No.10 over the ongoing Occupational Pensions Saga.

Jenny will also tabling an Early Day Motion in Parliament calling on the Government to provide all those who lost most of their pensions when their company pension schemes wound up, with at least 90% of the expected pension - the level of support that people in the same situation receive today under the Pension Protection Fund.

Commenting, Jenny said:

"The message from today is clear. The longer the Government allows this scandal to go on, the more its reputation will be damaged.

"It is unbelievable that despite being found guilty over this issue on many different occasions, the Government is digging its heels in over just £19m a year. The Government wastes four times as much every year in tax credit overpayments in Wales alone.

"Unless the Government agrees to give ASW workers and others the same level of financial support people can get if their company pensions go bust today, the fight of pensions justice will continue.

"Despite having gone through hell over the last few years, ASW workers have proved their case time and time again. It is time for the Government to put an end to the financial misery and uncertainty that they continue to suffer by giving ASW workers the fair pension's settlement they have been calling for all along."

If you are a resident of the Cardiff Central constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
