On Friday 7th December Jenny Willott MP will be visiting a Carers UK stall at the University Hospital to highlight the rights Carers currently have and the need for more.

Each year Carers UK holds a Carers Rights Day to:

· Increase take up of benefits

· Make sure carers know their rights

· Guide carers towards practical support

· Raise awareness of the needs of carers

Welsh Liberal Democrat MP for Cardiff Central, Jenny Willott, said, "I am passionate about Carers rights. It upsets me when I see the large numbers of carers, particularly women, who are placed under great strain because of their care for a loved one without good access to information or to respite care.

"15% of young women carers reported being treated for mental illness compared to 9% for non carers. In men there was no discernable difference between non carers and carers.

"Carers play a vital role in society but often pay for it in lost earnings and poor mental health. Small things like respite care and access to information can create a win-win situation for the NHS, the taxpayer and carers.

"The Local Independent Advice Centre or Citizens' Advice Bureau can help people fill out the forms for benefits. Alternatively www.carersuk.org/Information is a very useful place to start for information and help. If you need advice about your caring situation please call CarersLine on 0808 808 7777."

If you are a resident of the Cardiff Central constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
