Today, Jenny Willott MP handed over a cheque for £2,500 to Ty Hafan, the Welsh Children's Hospice - money she raised from her 8 day husky trek across 400km of the Arctic in February 2007.

Jenny raised £10,000 in total from her 'Arctic Challenge', money that will also go to Crimestoppers, Cancer Research UK and the Children's Society.

She also received a large donation for her polar expedition from British Gas and met with representatives from BCB, a Cardiff based military equipment company who made a donation and supplied Jenny with a much of her kit for the trip in temperatures as low as -37?C.

Commenting, Jenny said:

"It costs more than £2.5m a year to run Ty Hafan so every single penny they can raise is absolutely vital. I am delighted that people in Cardiff were so generous in sponsoring me and I hope this money will play a small part in helping them carry out their vital work.

"I am especially grateful to British Gas who gave very generously and to BCB in Cardiff who sponsored me and gave me essential kit for putting up with the sub-zero temperatures.

"The Arctic Circle is one of the most beautiful and extreme environments in the world. While the trek was absolutely amazing, as someone who struggles with the cold in winter in Cardiff, I think it was definitely a once in a lifetime opportunity!

"I hope that other MPs will build on what has been started by the Westminster Challenge so that we can strengthen the visible link between politics and charity and raise more money for good causes across the whole of the country."

Liz Read, Head of Fundraising at Ty Hafan, said:

"This is a fantastic sum of money to receive just before Christmas.

"A lot of our fundraising involves setting up events which cost money in itself, so it's all the more helpful when people in the local community go out and raise money for us.

"We're currently preparing for the festive season with the children in the hospice and the money that Jenny has raised is the perfect Christmas present."

Richard Stephenson, Chairman of Westminster Challenge who organised the trek, added:

"We were delighted that Jenny was able to join our team for this challenge. In the most inhospitable environment on Earth, Jenny was just the kind of person you wanted on your team, always smiling, encouraging others and being a tower of strength at times when you would rather give up.

"Her work with the 'Westminster Challenge' has benefited a number of charities, including Ty Hafan, and the people of Cardiff should be very proud to have an MP who is prepared to go to the ends of the Earth to support these good causes!"

If you are a resident of the Cardiff Central constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
