Tory Proposals Will Do Nothing To Help Wales' Poorest Back Into Work

January 8, 2008 12:00 AM

Responding to the proposals released today, Jenny Willott, Welsh Liberal Democrat MP for Cardiff Central and member of the Work and Pensions Select Committee, which is currently running an inquiry into Child Poverty, said:

"The Tory proposals are hollow rhetoric, designed to sound tough, and will do nothing to help people in Wales back into work. It can only increase child poverty.

"The key problem is how to reduce poverty and raise aspirations by ensuring everyone can access a fulfilling and sustainable job, not cosmetically lowering the benefit claimant numbers.

"The Tories are harking back to their Thatcherite days by encouraging people to see anyone receiving benefits as a sponger. The reality is that the vast majority of lone parents, parents of disabled children and unemployed people in Wales want to work.

"The Tories are completely missing the point on welfare reform. We must focus on investing in overcoming the barriers that stop people working - the problems of low skills, mental barriers to work and physical issues such as lack of appropriate childcare."

If you are a resident of the Cardiff Central constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
