PROSPECT OF 'REFUSENIKS' LOOMS ON ID CARDS - WILLOTT

Today, the Joseph Rowntree Reform Trust released results of a survey it commissioned into the introduction of Identity Cards showing that 25% of the public are deeply opposed and the majority are uncomfortable with the prospect of ID cards holding large amounts of personal information.
Commenting, Jenny Willott, Lib Dem Shadow Justice Minister and MP for Cardiff Central, said:
"These polling figures suggest that a large number of people may refuse to co-operate with the Government's ID card scheme. This is a serious blow to the Government's hopes of introducing ID cards smoothly and to the enormous personal database that will accompany them.
"It is clear that public opinion is rapidly turning against the Government's ID card scheme as more and more people understand how invasive it is, and the extreme difficulties of keeping confidential and personal data secure.
"The Government's proposal to force people to take an ID card in order to gain a driving license suggests that Ministers are deeply concerned at the prospect of a mass public rebellion."
