Giant Database Beggars Belief

Commenting on reports that the Government are planning to introduce a giant database of all phone calls, emails and internet use through the Data Communications Bill, Welsh Liberal Democrat MP for Cardiff Central Jenny Willott said:
"The idea that the Government could be keeping tabs on everyone's phone and internet use will send a shiver down many people's spines.
"Targeted monitoring of communications may well be a useful tool in aiding investigations, but these must have appropriate safeguards. Simply gathering everyone's data is illiberal and irresponsible.
"It's hard to see how useful this will even be. Any relevant information will be buried under mountains of innocent people's data. Given this Government's record on keeping personal data secure I dread to think what could happen if this is approved.
"After the Government were forced to climb down on 42 days and secret inquests, I would have thought they had learnt their lesson, but clearly their appetite for intrusive measures remains undiminished.
"These plans belong in a bad sci-fi novel, not on the statute book."
