Number of Welsh jobseekers per job vacancy nearly doubles in a month

May 5, 2009 12:00 AM

There are more than seven Welsh jobseekers for every vacancy in Wales, nearly double the number from a month earlier.

There were 63,000 Jobseekers Allowance Claimants in January 2009 compared to 8,781 advertised vacancies recorded by Jobcentres.

The figures, revealed in a Parliamentary answer, show that in January:

· There are 35 (or 88%) Welsh constituencies where jobseekers outnumber vacancies by more than five to one - up from 21 in December

· There are 15 (or 38%) Welsh constituencies where jobseekers outnumber vacancies by more than ten to one - up from 7 in December

· There are 10 (or 25%) Welsh constituencies in which jobseekers outnumber vacancies by more than 15 to 1 - up from just 1 in December

· There are 4 (or 10%) Welsh constituencies in which jobseekers outnumber vacancies by more than 20 to 1 - up from 1 in December

A full breakdown by parliamentary constituency is attached.

Commenting, Jenny Willott, Welsh Liberal Democrat MP for Cardiff Central, said:

"It's no good for Gordon Brown to keep talking about helping the unemployed back in to work if the jobs simply don't exist.

"The number of Jobseekers for every job vacancy rises every month. Across Wales, Jobseekers outnumber the number of job vacancies by an average of seven to one, and in some places it is as high as twenty to one.

"It's high time the Government scrapped the useless VAT cut and invested the money into creating jobs and fast."

If you are a resident of the Cardiff Central constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
