Alcohol-related deaths up 40%

There has been a 40% rise in the number deaths related to alcohol in the last ten years, figures highlighted by the Liberal Democrats have revealed.
The figures, released in answer to a Parliamentary Question, show that:
• The number of deaths related to alcohol have risen 38.9% to 7,341 since 1999
• There has been a 24% increase in the number of under-40s dying due to alcohol related reasons
• The number of women dying has risen 32%
• The number of men dying has risen 43%
Commenting, Jenny Willott, Welsh Liberal Democrat MP for Cardiff Central, said:
"This is shocking evidence of the scale of the alcohol crisis facing us.
"Ministers have ignored the fact that thousands of people are dying because of excessive alcohol consumption for too long. They don't even know how many people on benefits are in need of alcohol treatment.
"Only a tiny minority of those with alcohol addiction problems are receiving treatment. What's more, the drinking culture seems to start younger in Wales than most other developed countries.
"Unless the Government invests in treatment services, puts an end to alcohol being sold at pocket-money prices, and starts educating our children, then these figures are set to get even worse."
