WALES COULD BE A GREEN WINNER IF GOVERNMENT FINALLY DELIVERS ON RENEWABLES

July 15, 2009 12:00 AM

Commenting on the Government's new Renewable Energy Strategy released today, Jenny Willott, Welsh Liberal Democrat MP for Cardiff Central, said:

"If the Government can finally deliver on its green rhetoric, Wales could be one of the biggest winners.

"This Government's appalling track record on renewables has withheld enormous environmental and economic benefits from people in Wales. Britain is one of the worst performers on green energy in the whole of the EU.

"The Government has a long way to go to convince the public and investors that they are serious about renewables, especially given their continuing support for new nuclear power and fossil fuels.

"Whilst I would like to see the Government be even more ambitious, this is a step in the right direction, especially for Wales. Wales has some of the best renewable energy resources in Europe and the potential to be a world leader in green technology and green jobs.

"The Government must not put all its eggs into one basket. We need to make use of all types of renewable energy if we are to meet the target of 30% of our electricity from renewables by 2020, and we should make better use of the abundant marine and tidal resources along the Welsh coastline."

If you are a resident of the Cardiff Central constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
