BABYSITTING BAN IS LABOUR'S NANNY STATE GONE MAD

September 28, 2009 12:00 AM

Commenting on the case of two police officers who were told to end their childminding arrangement by Ofsted on the grounds that it breached the Childcare Act 2006, Jenny Willott, Welsh Liberal Democrat MP for Cardiff Central, said:

"This is just the latest example of Labour's nanny state gone mad.

"Why on earth should two mothers have to register as childminders when they are simply look after each others children in order to get back into work?

"This government seems to want to poke its nose ever deeper into people's lives. The new Vetting and Barring System will subject a raft of other neighbourly and community arrangements to government regulation.

"This mass regulation of informal agreements will only deter people from helping each other out and will lead to a culture of mistrust and suspicion. This can only be damaging in the long-run.

"The state needs to take an almighty step back, out of people's lives."

If you are a resident of the Cardiff Central constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
