CIGARETTE VENDING MACHINE PROPOSALS ARE LUDICROUSLY IMPRACTICAL

October 12, 2009 12:00 AM

Commenting ahead of the vote today (Monday) in the House of Commons over proposals contained in the Health Bill to require bar and pub staff to check the age ID before operating cigarette vending machine by remote control, Jenny Willott, Welsh Liberal Democrat MP for Cardiff Central, said:

"These proposals are ludicrously impractical and most landlords see it as an unnecessary extra burden on their businesses.

"When bars are busy, it will be very difficult for bar staff to check ID and operate a vending machine within their line of sight when they have long queues of customers wanting a drink.

"I will be voting in favour of a ban on cigarette vending machines. I don't see why we can't do what they do on the continent and allow cigarettes to be bought over the bar? That way, staff can check ID for cigarettes and drinks at the same time without any extra hassle."

If you are a resident of the Cardiff Central constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
