GOVERNMENT 'HOT AIR' ON CLIMATE CHANGE CHALLENGED BY 10.10 VOTE

October 20, 2009 12:00 AM

Tomorrow, the Liberal Democrats have secured a debate in the House of Commons on climate change forcing all MPs to vote on whether to commit Parliament itself and the entire public sector to cut their carbon emissions by 10% by 2010.

Commenting, Welsh Liberal Democrat MP for Cardiff Central, Jenny Willott, said:

"What better way for the government to show its commitment to tackling climate change than to sign up the public sector and Parliament itself to the 10.10 target.

"The Liberal Democrats are already committed to reducing their carbon emissions by 10% by the end of 2010. But while some members of the Government seem keen, they have shied away from an official commitment.

"Parliament can make 10% cuts in its own emissions by 2010, and so can Government. It just needs the political commitment. Tomorrow MPs can send a clear message to the Government that the time to act on climate change is now.

"I shall be supporting the motion tomorrow and I call on all MPs to do the same. The next few weeks and months are vitally important in our efforts to tackle climate change. The motion tomorrow will send a powerful signal to the Government to take action now".

If you are a resident of the Cardiff Central constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
