Lib Dem MP backs pub landlords' campaign for minimum price for alcohol

October 20, 2009 12:00 AM

Welsh Liberal Democrat MP for Cardiff Central, Jenny Willott, has today signed 'The Publican's' petition, backed by pub landlords, calling for a minimum price for alcohol to prevent supermarkets selling alcohol at a loss.

The petition, states:

"We the undersigned petition the Prime Minister to Back The Publican's Make it the Minimum campaign and introduce a minimum price of 50p for every unit of alcohol sold. This will end cheap booze promotions in supermarkets and bring off-trade prices closer to the cost of alcohol in the pub - the home of responsible drinking".

The Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) believe that cut price booze deals are not only encouraging alcohol misuse, the drastically undercut pubs and are a key reason why up to 52 pubs are closing every single week across the UK.

Jenny Willott MP said, "I am backing this campaign for two reasons.

"Firstly, because it will protect pubs from unfair competition from supermarkets who are willing to fund losses on alcohol promotions by increasing their prices on other products.

"And secondly, by standing by and doing nothing, the Government is helping to fuel a dangerous booze culture in parts of Wales. Yesterday I released figures showing that there will be over 7,000 deaths from alcohol-related causes by 2019. This disturbing figure underlines the need for minimum alcohol pricing in the UK.

"I fully support minimum pricing for alcohol".
