Climate deal gloom exposes Labour's weak leadership - Willott

November 6, 2009 12:00 AM

Today, the UK government said it's highly unlikely that a new legally binding climate treaty can be agreed this year, and that a full treaty may be more than a year away.

Two years ago, the world's governments vowed to finalise a treaty at the Copenhagen climate summit this December. The UK government now says only a political deal is likely.

Welsh Liberal Democrat MP for Cardiff Central, Jenny Willott said:

"This is extremely worrying.

"One of the reasons it is proving so hard to get a deal is because some western governments have been talking the climate change talk but not delivering.

"UK greenhouse gas emissions have hardly dropped at all since Labour came to power and our renewable energy output is one of the worst in Europe.

"It's little wonder that developing countries are not prepared to sign up when western countries aren't really changing. The government needs to show the world that Britain is serious about climate change, put its money where its mouth is and start to reduce our emissions seriously now."

If you are a resident of the Cardiff Central constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
