WILLOTT DEMANDS CUT IN SOUTH WALES RAIL FARES

February 8, 2010 12:00 AM

Jenny & TrainJenny Willott, Welsh Liberal Democrat MP for Cardiff Central, is urging the Government to carry out a comprehensive review of rail fares in order to bring down the costs of public transport for people in South Wales.

Commenting, Jenny said:

"Rail passengers in South Wales have been financially squeezed to the limit. It's time to say enough is enough.

"The railways are absolutely essential for making it easier for people to move around without damaging the environment.

"The public are happy to pay a fair price for rail travel. But the practice of hiking the price of rail fare at levels well above inflation is getting ridiculous.

"When some people are getting back into their cars to avoid expensive rail fares, you know the system is not working. Travelling by rail should be the cheapest, cleanest and easiest route."

Cat Hobbs, public transport campaigner at Campaign for Better Transport, said:

"We're pleased that these Welsh MPs have joined a growing number of MPs who are standing up for passengers and saying that fares cannot keep rising above inflation. Politicians are realising that the green travel option should be the easy option."

If you are a resident of the Cardiff Central constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
