Fight Against Child Poverty
Jenny called on the Government to end child poverty as she signed up to the ‘Keep the Promise’ campaign on 4 October 2008.
Despite the Government’s pledge to half child poverty by 2010 and to eradicate child poverty by 2020, the number of children living in poverty in the UK has risen sharply since 2007.
In June 2009, the report from the Joseph Rowntree Foundation on Child Poverty in Wales revealed that 32% of children in Wales currently live in poverty.
Jenny has campaigned hard against child poverty over the years.
In December 2008, she was nominated by the Child Poverty Action Group (CPAG) for its MP of the Year Award because of her ‘outstanding work’ to oppose government plans to slash the length of the eligible period for backdating housing benefit, council tax benefit and pension credit claims, according to a CPAG spokesperson.

To end child poverty, Jenny calls on the Government to:
- Cut income tax bills for low and middle incomes families by an average of £700 each;
- Expand good quality childcare to help parents getting back to work; and
- Attach extra education funds to children from the most deprived background.
